Supporting Young People on the Autism Spectrum to Build Independent Futures
Despite having strong qualifications and valuable skills, people on the autism spectrum are disproportionately affected by unemployment. In most cases, this is not due to a lack of ability, but rather to barriers and a lack of awareness and understanding within recruitment processes and workplace environments.
This makes the work of the Autism Competence Centre of Diakonie Düsseldorf all the more important. The centre provides individualised support for children, adolescents, and young adults, fostering their development in areas such as communication, social behavior, and everyday life skills. In addition, the centre supports parents and teachers through counseling and information services.
A key focus of the centre work is supporting young people in their transition from school to employment. As Anne Rockel of Diakonie Düsseldorf emphasizes, »People with autism are a real asset to companies.« The Autism Competence Centre plays an important intermediary role in making this potential visible. It supports young people as they enter the world of work, helps them find suitable vocational training opportunities or jobs, and connects them with appropriate employers. In doing so, the centre helps pave the way toward an independent and self-determined life.
Through our donation, we hope to contribute to ensuring that young people with autism receive the support they need to build independent and fulfilling futures.
